The Rex Cinema House

Located in the Central Makola district of Accra, Ghana, the Rex Cinema House was established in 1937 as a film, music, and entertainment hub. During the time that it was open, the Rex Cinema screened numerous Ghanaian and foreign films.

As with many other cinema houses, the Rex Cinema was impacted as the moving-going culture ceased to exist. The rise in popularity of digital film and media and TV culture led to the subtle disappearance of cinemas and theaters. As a result, the funds and resources needed to maintain cinemas’ upkeep eventually diminished.

However, with the help of the community, we can save a piece of history.

Our Mission

In 2013, filmmaker Akosua Adoma Owusu, began plans to revive the Rex Cinema realizing its potential as an art and cultural center. She launched a successful Kickstarter campaign and raised over $9000. Thus began the Rex Cinema’s restoration. With upcoming plans to reopen the Rex Cinema, Owusu hopes the cinema house will develop into a creative space that emphasizes Ghanaian artistry, storytelling, and filmmaking and supports local artists.
