Our Vision

Inspiring Creativity through Preservation.

The Rex Cinema House exists within the realm of Ghanaian arts and cinema houses. It fosters a creative culture that showcases Ghanaian perspectives and contemporary Ghanaian society through the use of storytelling. The Rex Cinema arts and cultural programming’s goal is to facilitate enriching transnational conversations about art and film created by Africans in the diaspora. This includes, but is not limited to, screening work relevant to our experiences and inviting artists and film programmers to learn, grow and showcase their films.

After its revival, the pioneer championing the cause, Akosua Adoma Owusu, envisions the Rex Cinema as a symbol of cinematic excellence in Ghana. Her goal is to create a sustainable movie-going culture by bringing relevant social, economic, and political issues to the forefront through films. The Rex Cinema will serve as a multidisciplinary art and cultural center, where artists and programmers can hold residency, and create inclusive, enriching art and film programs.

The Rex Cinema seeks to inspire a new wave of Ghanaian filmmakers to collaborate and transform the art and filmmaking scene in Accra. The Rex Cinema will provide these filmmakers with the knowledge and resources they need to achieve this goal. Our hope is that the Rex can serve as the “Mecca” for this sort of work and artistry, not just in West Africa, but in the continent at large.
